Golf Society

We play all year round, weekly on both 18-hole and 9-hole courses around the borough or just outside it. The 9-hole group plays on Thursdays, while the 18-hole group plays on Thursdays and alternate Mondays.

All standards are welcome, from club golfers to near beginners, and at the start of 2016 we had approximately 10 regular players for 18 holes and 20+ players of both sexes for 9 holes. Members choose weekly from the schedule, which courses and dates they want to play.

The 9-hole rounds appear to usefully complement the U3A Golf Lessons organised by Gloria Turner at Chelsfield Lakes Golf Course (see the Study Groups Booklet), and allows players to progress from the driving range lessons to the course, and then later to 18-hole rounds if they wish.

We are lucky in the number of golf courses in the Bromley area and so vary the experience by using as many as we can:- For the 9-hole courses we use those at Addington Court, Bromley Golf Centre (Magpie Hall Lane - Bromley Common), Lullingstone Park, Orpington Golf Centre (Cray Valley), and Godstone.

For the 18-hole rounds we use Addington Court, Birchwood Park, Chelsfield Lakes, Darenth Valley, High Elms, Lullingstone Park, Orpington Golf Centre (Cray Valley), Pedham Place, and Selsdon Park Hotel. Other courses may feature if they have suitably cheap offers.

You do need your own clubs (and a bag), and to be able to get yourself to the course. Otherwise, the only cost is for the round, approximately £7 to £10.50 for 9 holes, and £13 to £18 for 18 holes (pensioners’ rates). The co-ordination / admin is all done by email, but I suppose these days you only need a Smartphone or a Tablet to send/receive emails.
