Theatre Group visits The 39 Steps at the Trafalgar Theatre

This hilarious play is based on Alfred Hitchcock’s original film which was based on the book by John Buchan, and there are several references to Alfred Hitchcock and his other films. With only a cast of 4 playing 139 parts (hard to believe but that’s what it says in the synopsis) this fast-paced adaptation had most of us laughing from start to finish. Tom Byrne as Richard Hannay, sporting a magnificent moustache on his stiff upper lip, dashes around encountering dastardly murders and devastatingly beautiful and mysterious women on his way. Safeena Ladha expertly portrays these women while Maddie Rice cleverly plays multiple parts both male and female and at one point two at the same time! Although these three are amazing, the star of the show has to be Eugene McCoy, also playing many parts, with his seemingly elastic face, flexible body and ability to reel off words and numbers at a rate of knots. Altogether a great show.
